I was taking some courses in Japanese and some in English -- probably about half and half. At the time, even if the course was in Japanese, I could write papers in English since all of the teachers could read and write English with competency. But all of that probably depends on your major. I was a humanities major, but some of my friends in business and marketing had to do class projects with other Japanese students, and I think that was harder.
